International Women’s Day is celebrated across the globe, on March 8 every year, and is an opportunity to celebrate women around us- a reminder of the strength of women and all the progress we have made. On this day, we celebrate womanhood, and what better day than this to discuss and celebrate powerful women in Bollywood? Kangana Ranaut, Swara Bhasker, Taapsee Pannu represent change, the unabashed voices that aren’t afraid to speak up, and here’s delving deeper into why we need more fearless women like these.
While this day serves as a reminder of how far women have come, fighting for their rights, it also highlights all the societal issues we still have to fight for- women’s rights, pay disparity, lack of representation and so on. That is where celebs- who have a far and wide reach -come into the picture. When someone who has the power to influence a mass of people speaks, everyone sits up and takes notice. Women like Kangana, Swara Bhasker, Taapsee Pannu and many others have caused a stir in the male-dominated film industry, proving it’s NOT a man’s world!
Kangana Ranaut has a mind of her own and is not afraid to speak up, as we have seen in many instances. Not the one to mince her words, she stands firm and absolutely refuses to abandon her opinions and beliefs. The actress has often spoken up about the pay gap and women empowerment. Kangana has on many occasions refused to at second fiddle to the likes of an Aamir, SRK or a Salman just for a blockbuster film. Taapsee Pannu not only openly airs her views on social media, but has also been a part of some women-centric films such as Pink, Saand Ki Aankh, Naam Shabana, and Thappad. Just recently the actress was called ‘female Ayushmann Khurrana’, to which she had a classy response and said, “What about calling me Bollywood ki pehli Taapsee Pannu?”
Swara Bhasker on the other hand, an active supporter of the #MeToo movement, has never shied away from saying what needed to be said. Swara is the first person you will find marching against the government's infamous policies and doesn't bow down by threats. Despite massive trolling, resistance and more, the actress doesn’t back down. While you may or may not agree with her views, you cannot deny, the lady knows how to make her voice heard.
On this day, let us celebrate more women like these, let’s hope more women take a cue and speak up against wrongdoings, atrocities, and inequality. To every woman reading this, we wish you a Happy International Women’s Day!
